We are excited to announce a new Music Education Program for students in grades 5, 6, and 7 at all of our neighborhood schools!
Whether your student already plays an instrument or has never picked one up before, there is a place for them in music education! No previous musical experience is required. Students who are curious about music and want to learn an instrument are encouraged to join.
This program is designed as a connected, whole experience in music education, with students able to participate in both during-the-school-day learning and after-school band opportunities. Rather than choosing one or the other, these experiences work together to support student growth, skill development, and enjoyment of music.
We plan to offer two connected opportunities:
π΅ Specialized Music Education During the School Day
Students will receive foundational music instruction during the school day, building skills in rhythm, reading music, listening, and instrument basics.
πΊ After-School Band
After-school band provides an additional opportunity for students to extend their learning, rehearse in a group setting, and further develop their musical abilities and performance skills.
Why Music Education?
Music education is about much more than learning to play an instrument. Participating in music can help students strengthen skills that support learning and personal growth, including:
Memory and concentration β Learning music challenges students to recognize patterns, remember sequences, and stay focused.
Math and reading connections β Rhythm, counting, musical notation, and listening reinforce skills across academic subjects.
Teamwork β Music education teaches students to listen to one another, work together, and contribute to a group.
Confidence and perseverance β Learning an instrument takes practice, patience, and persistence, giving students opportunities to experience pride in mastering something new.
Creativity and self-expression β Music gives students another way to communicate, create, and express themselves.
Don't Have an Instrument? That's Okay!
Students do not need to already own or play an instrument to express interest. Beginners are welcome!
The district will host an Instrument Rental Day on August 27 for families interested in renting an instrument. Additional information about the event will be shared with interested families.
