Sierra Vista Unified School District

This afternoon at JCMS a student came to the office and informed staff that another student was trying to sell bullets to them. That student was immediately brought to the office and it was discovered they were carrying 10 live ammunition bullets on them. The Sierra Vista Police Department was called and is on scene assisting with the situation. The student did not have any weapons on them and was not making any threats. The student will face discipline in line with district policy. Thank you to JCMS staff and SVPD for their quick action and a special thank you to the JCMS student for speaking up. We have amazing students at JCMS who follow our Coyote Code and help keep everyone safe.

“Broadway” at HM - The Huachuca Mountain Music Club presented their “Broadway” performance on April 20th to all students and staff, and an evening performance on April 25th. With the support of the amazing parent volunteers the club of about 40 students, presented an amazing performance that included solos, choir, and dance. On their magical journey into the world of musicals, they shared songs from “Frozen” to“ Hamilton”. Thank you Music Club, all organizers, and volunteers for this wonderful performance.

Due to Summer Lunch Program restriction there have been changes made to the Elementary locations for the 2023 Summer Academy. Carmichael Elementary will host Carmichael and Town & Country students. Bella Vista will host BV and Huachuca Mountain students. Village Meadows remains unchanged and will host VM and PDS students. There are no changes for grades 7-12, they will remain at Buena High School If you have already registered your students there is no need to re-register them. Bus routes will change to accommodate the new sites. Breakfast and lunch will continue to be free for all students registered for Summer Academy. Complete schedules and bus routes will be available towards the end of May.

Another one of our amazing Buena CTE Programs competed in the recent SkillsUSA State Championships. Buena Film and TV had several student medal at the state championships. Michael Stanley and Chase Deleon won 2nd in Audio/ Radio Production. They had 7 hours to make a 2min radio newscast and commercial. Annette Herrera and Kekoa Namuo won 1st place in Digital Cinema. They had less than 24 hours to make a 3 minute short film. Annette and Kekoa will be headed to Atlanta in June to compete in the National SkillsUSA Competition! Congratulations to Michael, Chase, Annette, Kekoa and all of our Buena Film & TV students!

An ambulance had to be called to Town & Country for a student experiencing a medical emergency. That student's parents have been notified . There is no threat or danger to Town & Country and dismissal will happen as normal.

Congratulations Buena Engineering. They competed in the State SkillsUSA Engineering Technical Design Competition. Out of 19 teams, Buena swept the competition, getting 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The 3rd place team: Kade Spilsbury, Ben Warwick, and Sam Sieler. The 2nd place team: Summer Martinez, Grace Hohman, and Lillian White. And in 1st place and headed to Atlanta, Georgia in June to compete at the National Conference: Dylan Rubstello, Kevin Tran, and Emery Denham. This is the second year in a row that Buena has been the State Champion in this category. Also congratulations to Summer Martinez for placing 2nd at the State Competition in the Facilithon challenge about Facility Management. Congratulations to Buena CTE Engineering!

The Bolts are showing off their talents - The Talent Show is back! - Huachuca Mountain students presented their special gifts on Friday 4/14/23. An amazing variety of talent from singing, dancing, jokes, piano performances, to a Tuxedocc presentation put smiles on the audience's faces and laughs in their bellies. The happy audience included all students, staff, and parents. A special thanks to the staff for organizing the show and our parent volunteers!

Join the Rotary Club on Monday, April 17 at Vinny's New York Pizza to support Project Graduation 2023! Project Graduation is a free, all night party for Buena Seniors that gives them a safe and fun way to celebrate. The whole night is a result of hard work and generosity of our amazing community!

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Three Buena art students, Summer Martinez, Trinity Johnson and Camryn Bennefield, have submitted their art work to Congressman Juan Ciscomani’s office for consideration. A panels of district artists select the winning entries from all of the pieces submitted for District 6. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol. Buena Culinary just returned from the FCCLA (Family, Career, Community, Leaders of America) State Leadership Conference and Competition at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson Az, where over 1,000 students from Az FCCLA members competed in Culinary, Hospitality , Early Childhood Education, Fashion and Leadership events. 7 Buena Advanced Culinary Students attended with the following recognitions: Shariah Turner- Cupcake Decorating- Bronze Medal Yasmin Hernandez-Acosta- Cake Decorating- Silver Medal Rebekah Padilla- Culinary Display- Silver Medal Colton Jones- Culinary- Bronze Medal Joshua Chieppa- Culinary- Bronze Medal Nathan Moses- Food Innovations- Silver Medal Devin Tureson- Mystery Basket- Bronze Medal

Attention Buena/Palominas Bus riders. If we are still under the fire restrictions in the morning in the Hereford/Palominas area our Palominas Bus routes will be modified with the following: Any stops along Hereford Rd will be pick up at Moson and Nevada stop time 6:40am to 6:45am Any stops on Palominos Rd will be picked up at the Bright Spot at 6:15am. If there are no traffic restrictions in place in the morning the routes will run as normal.

Due to the fire in the Palominas area, Buena students on all Palominas bus routes may not be able to get to their bus stops. Students who cannot be dropped off due to road closures will be transported back to Buena for parent pick up. No routes in Sierra Vista are affected.

Registration for the 3rd annual Summer Academy starts today!!! The Summer Academy is free to all students who are currently enrolled in Kinder-12th grade, no matter what school you attend. The Academy is Monday through Friday beginning on June 5th and ending July 14 . Students will be able to take up to four courses of their choosing. Remediation in one or both English Language Arts and Math is offered for K-8th and credit recovery for high school student in ELA, Math, Health, Future Focus, Tech Foundation and Social Studies. We also offer a wide variety of Enrichment class so students can explore and have some fun over the summer. On Tuesday night Buena High School Fine Arts presented the Class of 2023 Arizona State Seal of Arts Proficiency Candidates during a Capstone Review at the Klein Center for the Performing Arts. For an Arizona student to qualify for the seal, they must complete a Seal of Arts Proficiency Pathway and successfully graduate from an Arizona district public school. The pathway is designed to celebrate students who complete a rigorous, standards-based, and high-quality arts education course of study. To qualify for the Arizona State Seal of Arts Proficiency, a student will complete: 1. A final GPA of 3.0 or 4.0 in each qualifying arts/career and technical education (CTE) course. 2. 4 minimum credit requirements in one of the following ways: a. A minimum of 4 credits in one artistic discipline: (dance, music, theatre, visual arts or media arts) OR b. 3 credits in one artistic discipline, and 1 qualifying creative industries CTE credit or separate artistic discipline. OR c. 2 credits in one artistic discipline, and 2 credits in a qualifying creative industries CTE class or a separate artistic discipline. 3. 80 hours of arts related extracurricular activities 4. A student capstone project Buena Fine Arts students who have met all of the requirements are: Braylee Norton with her presentation in Cognitive Learning and Music Education along with a performance of Aria for Alto Saxophone by Eugene Bozza Megan Gregory with 3 vocal performances- Via Dolorosa by Billy Sprague, Nacht und Traeume by Franz Schubert and Goodnight My Someone by Meredith Willson. Chase Deleon with his performance on trumpet of Trumpet Concerto in Eb by Joseph Haydn-First Movement and on piano with Disney Medley by Tony Ann When each of these talented students graduate in May the Arizona State Seal of Arts Proficiency will be on their diploma. Buena is full of amazing teachers and this year we are incredibly honored to name Jill Osterman as our Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Osterman teaches Social Studies at Buena and her students love coming to class everyday. Mrs. Osterman can often be found greeting her students in the hallway before class, giving out hugs as needed whether in celebration of an achievement or to show support in tough times, Her students know from the first day of class they are loved and cared about. Once class begins, Mrs. Osterman challengers her students to think about history in a variety of ways. The are challenged to analyze, create and investigate. Her lessons are thought out and creative, having students explore and make connections. Their work is evident throughout her classroom, as she is constantly displaying their assignments and celebrating their learning. She reviews her student's data, breaking down questions, reteaching and reassessing. Mrs. Osterman gives her students every opportunity to show their mastery of the content in different ways. Each lesson shows creativity and diversity, reaching all learning modalities. Congratulations to Mrs. Osterman for being Buena's Teacher of the Year!!
