Beginning this school year, Arizona's Healthy Schools Act (A.R.S. §15-242.01) establishes new statewide requirements for certain foods and beverages shared with students during the school day.
Please note: This is an Arizona state law, not an SVUSD-created rule. All public schools across Arizona are required to comply.
Here's what families need to know:

🚫 Students may not share lunches or snacks that contain any of the prohibited ingredients listed in the new law.

Buena High School’s Sports Medicine Career and Technical Education (CTE) program introduces students to the science of movement, injury prevention, and athletic performance through hands-on, real-world learning.
In Sports Medicine I, students explore exercise science, physical therapy, and the physiology of sports and fitness. Students actively participate in lab experiences while learning foundational skills in athletic health and safety, with opportunities to earn CPR and First Aid certification. Students may also participate in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) competitions.
In Sports Medicine II, students dive deeper into human anatomy and physiology while studying athletic training, injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation. Lab-based learning continues with a focus on real-world application and advanced sports medicine concepts.
Students can also gain leadership and technical experience through additional opportunities:
🩺 Sports Medicine Lab Assistant – Support classroom and lab activities, assist with equipment setup and maintenance, inventory supplies, troubleshoot equipment, and help enhance instructional experiences while building leadership skills.
🏃 Sports Medicine Internship – Apply learned skills in real-world settings by assisting with lab operations, supporting instructors and students, and gaining hands-on experience under teacher supervision. May include time commitments outside the school day.

Buena High School’s Nursing and Home Health Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs prepare students for careers in healthcare through hands-on learning, certifications, and real-world experience.
In Fundamentals of Nursing Services I, students learn safety, infection control, communication, personal care, and basic healthcare skills while earning certifications in CPR/First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens.
In Advanced Nursing Services II, students build advanced patient care skills with a focus on geriatric care, anatomy and physiology, legal and ethical responsibilities, and nursing fundamentals. Students may earn HIPAA and Professional Rescuer CPR certifications and participate in HOSA competitions.
Additional pathways include:
🏥 EKG Technician – Learn cardiac monitoring and EKG interpretation
📚 Medical Terminology – Build essential healthcare language skills
🩺 Advanced Nursing III (Internship) – Gain real-world healthcare experience while earning school credit
Students interested in caregiving can also pursue Home Health:

In **Law & Public Safety I**, students explore the American criminal justice system, including law enforcement, courts, corrections, crime and punishment, and the development of laws in the United States.
In **Law & Public Safety II**, students build advanced skills in law, public safety, and security while working with the Arizona Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies. Students gain insight into crime prevention, emergency response, and public safety careers.
Students may also have opportunities to earn valuable certifications, including:
✅ Crime Scene Management
✅ CPR/First Aid
✅ Psychological First Aid
✅ Emergency Response
✅ Certified Protection Officer
Students can further develop leadership and workplace skills as **Law & Public Safety Lab Assistants**, supporting classroom operations, maintaining equipment, and assisting with instruction.

The U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) is one of the largest character development and citizenship programs for young people in the world. At Buena High School, JROTC helps students develop leadership skills, self-confidence, teamwork, personal responsibility, and a commitment to serving their community.
Guided by its mission, **"To Motivate Young People to be Better Citizens,"** JROTC is a four-year program that prepares students for success in school, careers, and life.
📚 **Year 1 (LET 1) – The Emerging Leader**
Students build a strong foundation through lessons in leadership, personal growth, teamwork, decision-making, health and fitness, and service learning.
📚 **Year 2 (LET 2) – The Developing Leader**
Students expand their leadership skills while learning first aid, citizenship, government, teamwork, and community service.
📚 **Year 3 (LET 3) – The Supervising Leader**
Cadets strengthen their ability to lead others through advanced leadership training, decision-making, citizenship, and service-learning opportunities.

Senior cadets take on leadership roles within the program while focusing on management, mentorship, citizenship, and community engagement.
