Buena is full of amazing teachers and this year we are incredibly honored to name Jill Osterman as our Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Osterman teaches Social Studies at Buena and her students love coming to class everyday. Mrs. Osterman can often be found greeting her students in the hallway before class, giving out hugs as needed whether in celebration of an achievement or to show support in tough times, Her students know from the first day of class they are loved and cared about. Once class begins, Mrs. Osterman challengers her students to think about history in a variety of ways. The are challenged to analyze, create and investigate. Her lessons are thought out and creative, having students explore and make connections. Their work is evident throughout her classroom, as she is constantly displaying their assignments and celebrating their learning. She reviews her student's data, breaking down questions, reteaching and reassessing. Mrs. Osterman gives her students every opportunity to show their mastery of the content in different ways. Each lesson shows creativity and diversity, reaching all learning modalities. Congratulations to Mrs. Osterman for being Buena's Teacher of the Year!!

Last Thursday was our annual Read Across America Family Night and it was an amazing time. Families and students came out to enjoy games, meet some great characters, and take home a book of their choosing. Thank you to all of the staff for their hard work and to our families who came out to enjoy. Happy Reading!!!

Spring Break is March 13th through 17th. All school and district offices will be closed. We hope everyone enjoys their break and will see you all again on Monday, March 20th.

This week SVUSD honored 8 outstanding educators as Teacher of the Year for each of our schools. Every one of these individuals is an exemplary teacher and help all of their students be the best student they can be. Over the next 8 days we will meet each one of these teachers and learn a little bit about what makes them so amazing. Buena High School Theatre Arts presents "The Storm in the Barn" , written by Eric Coble from the graphic novel by Matt Phelan. The Storm in the Barn is a magical story that takes us to Kansas, 1937, in the midst of the Dust Bowl. Jack Clark is only 11 years old, but he must face the dust storms, the mysterious Dust Dementia and a strange and terrifying discovery he made in the barn next door. Jack finds himself questioning if he’s capable of being the hero. He is smaller than the other boys and not nearly as tough. He needs to protect his dying sister, overcome the sinister shadow lurking in the barn, and save his family. Maybe even save the world. On March 3rd, 2023 and March 4th, 2023, The Klein Center will open its doors at 6:30pm to present this American fable. The show will begin at 7pm. Tickets will be on sale for $5 per person. Due to our area forecast for ice and snow overnight all SVUSD schools will be closed to students for the full day on Thursday, March 2nd.

Join us for a dedication celebration for Mrs. Connie Johnson during our Governing Board meeting on Wednesday, February 22nd at the Rothery Educational Center Conference Room.

There will be no school on Friday, February 17th and Monday, February 20th in honor of Presidents Day. All school and district offices will also be closed. Please have a safe holiday weekend.

Due to our area forecast for ice and snow overnight all Sierra Vista Unified School District schools will have a delayed start time of two hours. Buena will begin at 9:20am, JCMS at 11am and elementary schools at 10am. Bus times will be pushed back 2 hours on all routes and stops. All release times will remain as a normal Wednesday school day. Breakfast will still be available but only cereal, lunch will be served as normal. Buena will not have zero hour. Thank you.

As a former special education/kindergarten teacher, my passion for helping kids grew into my motivation to start my masters in school counseling. Buena High has been cleared of any threat and classes have resumed as normal. SVPS will still be on campus as they finish their investigation.

Buena High has changed from a Lock Down to a Shelter in Place. Classes will resume as normal within the building, Sierra Vista Police Department will remain on scene continuing their investigation. During a Shelter in Place the campus does still remain closed to outside visitors. More information will be shared as it becomes available.

School counselors help students in more ways than you may know. This week we celebrate them as a part of National School Counseling Week 2023. All week we will feature one of our amazing counselors and what they to #HelpingStudentsDreamBig.

On January 23rd, Buena DECA attended a Rotary meeting to give a presentation about the various Buena CTE programs! Taking place at the Horace Steele room in the library on the Sierra Vista Cochise College campus at 12:00 pm, Buena DECA attended a Rotary Club of Sierra Vista meeting! In correlation with a DECA Project Management Business Solutions project, the Vice President of Career Development, Jenny Ou, gave a presentation about the Buena CTE department and the various CTE programs that Buena offers to its students. The president of Buena DECA, Victoria Kemnitz, attended this meeting with Jenny as well! The presentation covered an overview of what Buena CTE is, the benefits, its importance, how students get involved, how the community can help, and more. It was a fantastic meeting and Buena DECA hopes to maintain strong relations with the Rotary Club of Sierra Vista moving forward! It was a pleasure to be given the opportunity to speak to and meet with an organization that is always doing great things in the community. Buena JROTC and the Stocking Stuffer Program! This past holiday season, Buena High School's JROTC helped out with the Stocking Stuffer Program! Buena High School's Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) sponsored 10 children to the Stocking Stuffer Program, which helped provide clothing for 648 children in Sierra Vista, Huachuca City, Tombstone, and Palominas communities. The Stocking Stuffer Program is managed by Just Kids, Inc. and involves many other volunteers from the community. Buena JROTC's generosity touched the lives of so many children and made family life a little happier during the holiday season. Thank you to Buena JROTC for enhancing the lives of children in the area! Buena JROTC also participates in many other activities throughout the community, such as food drives, car washes, and more! Thank you for all you do and keep up the great work Buena JROTC!

Yesterday we held the 2nd annual SVUSD68 Spelling Bee. The 14 participants were the champions and runner-ups from each elementary and our middle school. Congratulations to all of our school winners for making it to the district wide Spelling Bee! After 17 rounds with 106 words called, January was the championship word. SVUSD68 2023 Champion is Quinn H. a 6th grader from Huachuca Mountain Elementary. And our runner-up, Landen M. a 4th grader from Village Meadows Elementary gave it his all! Quinn will be representing SVUSD68 at the Cochise County Regional Spelling Bee next month! Good Luck, Quinn!
