October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Bullying can impact a studentβs education, physical, emotional health, and their safety and well-being. Together we can create communities that are kinder, more inclusive and accepting for all students. Buena High School golfer Kade Spilsbury, shown above, displayed both class and sportsmanship in the Colts Sept. 6 triangular match with Marana Mountain View and Rincon which was played at the Pueblo Del Sol Golf Course in Sierra Vista.
According to Eric Krieg, Buena's boys golf coach, Kade called a two-stroke penalty on himself when he touched the sand in the bunker on his back swing.
"No one even noticed but he showed tremendous integrity by notifying his opponents of this mishap," Krieg said. "I believe most kids and even adults would not have done the same in this circumstance. I was really proud of Kade."
According to Rule 12.2b of the Rules of Golf, "when a golfer touches the sand in a bunker with a backswing, it is considered a penalty." This rule states that a player must not touch the sand in the bunker with their club or hand before making a stroke at the ball, except when taking their stance or making a practice swing.
"If a player does touch the sand in the bunker with their club or hand before making a stroke at the ball, they will incur a penalty of two strokes in stroke play and loss of hole in match play," the rule reads. "The reason for this rule is to ensure that players do not improve their lie or the conditions affecting their stroke by touching the sand in the bunker. The only exception to this rule is when players are smoothing the sand to care for the course, laying a club to rest in the sand, or striking the sand in anger or frustration."
With the two-stroke penalty, Kade finished with a score of 54, last on the team this particular match.
Kade Spilsbury, we salute you and commend your integrity. Keep up the good work. Your fair play and honesty are commendable.
