A+ School of Excellence

The Arizona Educational Foundation (AEF) has named Huachuca Mountain Elementary School  a recipient of the prestigious A+ School of Excellence Award® for the 2026–2030 cycle. The designation represents the highest state-level recognition awarded to Arizona public schools.

This honor marks a significant milestone for the district, as Huachuca Mountain Elementary becomes the second SVUSD school to earn the A+ distinction. Village Meadows Elementary School received the recognition in 2025, highlighting the district’s continued commitment to excellence and innovation across its schools.

Originally established more than four decades ago, the A+ School of Excellence program highlights schools that exemplify best practices in education and demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and strong community engagement. The rigorous adjudication process includes a detailed application, interviews, and an on-site evaluation conducted by a panel of experienced educators.

“Earning an A+ designation is a testament to a school community’s unwavering commitment to students,” said Brett Bonner, AEF’s Director of Professional Development and Dean of the AEF Academy. “It reflects excellence in leadership, teaching, and meaningful partnerships with families and the community.”

Schools recognized with the A+ distinction demonstrate:

  • Strong, collaborative leadership and a culture of professional growth

  • High-quality teaching and engaging learning experiences

  • Rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum promoting critical thinking

  • Active parent and community involvement

  • A safe, nurturing, and student-centered learning environment

Not to be confused with the Arizona Department of Education A–F accountability system, the A+ School of Excellence Award is open to schools earning an “A” or “B” letter grade that also exhibit exemplary practices beyond academic performance. Recipients show a commitment to innovation, adaptability, and comprehensive support for students and families.

As part of the four-year recognition period, Huachuca Mountain Elementary leaders will mentor aspiring administrators through AEF’s Principal’s Leadership Academy of Arizona and contribute to professional learning opportunities statewide.

SVUSD Superintendent Terri Romo praised the recognition, noting that it reflects the collective effort of staff, students, families, and community partners.

“This honor highlights the incredible work happening at Huachuca Mountain Elementary every day. Our dedicated staff, supportive families, and engaged students have created a culture where excellence thrives and every child is empowered to succeed. We are proud of this accomplishment and grateful to our community for being an essential part of the Lightning Bolts family.”

To celebrate this milestone, Sierra Vista Unified School District will host a community-wide celebration in the coming weeks. Event details and the official date will be announced once finalized.

AEF Chief Executive Officer Kim Graham emphasized that the A+ process benefits not only recognized schools but also those pursuing the designation, as it provides a meaningful framework for reflection, growth, and mentorship across Arizona’s education community.

Huachuca Mountain Elementary was one of 48 schools statewide selected for the 2026–2030 recognition period, placing it among Arizona’s most exemplary public schools.
